DESCRIPTION
Mendocino College seeks a creative, enthusiastic, and collaborative educator to teach courses in acting and directing. This individual will also produce and direct two main stage theater productions per year and produce two dance performances annually. We seek candidates who want to collaborate with other college departments and build relationships with community institutions. The successful candidate will partner with our Technical Theatre Director to provide leadership for the department and support its part-time instructors. The Theatre Department offers a Degree for Transfer in Theatre, an AA in Theatre or Dance, and an AA and Certificate in Technical Theatre. The successful candidate will also work with the Conservatory Cohort, a group of acting students who follow a four-semester sequence of intensive acting, voice, and movement classes.

ASSIGNMENT
his is a full-time, tenure-track position. The annual teaching load is 510 lecture hours, 680 lab hours, or a combination of the above. The annual work year includes 166 instructional days and nine professional development/flex days. The start date for this position will be August 18, 2025. This assignment may include day, evening, and weekend classes, as well as travel to, and instruction at, off-campus centers within the District.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Compensation is dependent on education and experience.
Annual salary offered at $72,287 - $100,687. Step seven (7) is the maximum step placement based on year for year teaching experience or two years of FTE work experience in the field per step.

Benefits: We offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes family medical, dental, vision, EAP benefits and employee life insurance with no monthly premium contribution from faculty members. Additional voluntary life insurance is available for employee purchase. Benefits are effective at the first of the month following hire date.
Paid Time Off: The successful candidate will earn ten (10) days of sick leave per year.
Retirement: This position is eligible for CalSTRS Retirement. Additional, voluntary 403{b) programs are available.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The successful candidate will support success by providing instructional support and institutional collaboration. This includes the following duties and/or assignments:
TEACHING:
- Instructs courses such as acting, directing, introduction to theatre, play development, audition techniques, physical theater, performance, introduction to playwriting, and dramatic literature and script analysis;
- Conducts classes and finals as included in the schedule of classes; prepares classroom presentations, student activities, and assignments; teaches class hours; evaluates students' performance based on quizzes, exams, projects, comprehensive finals and/or other assessments appropriate to the course outline; teaches courses in accordance with the description published in the catalog, the course outline, and the schedule of classes; prepares a syllabus for each course and distributes it to students at the first class meeting and/or electronically;
- Reports on time and prepared for classes;
- Posts and maintains student contact hours;
- Maintains current knowledge of the discipline and culturally-relevant teaching practices;
- Prepares and submits accurate and timely student reports;
- Teaching assignments may include classes at Center locations and/or on evenings and weekends.
DIRECTING AND PRODUCING DUTIES (with appropriate release time from teaching load):
- Under Direction of the Dean of Instruction and in collaboration with the Technical Theatre Director, provide overall leadership for theatre productions.;
- Direct and produce one main-stage theater production each semester;
- Produce one dance production each semester, in collaboration with director, choreographer(s), and dance faculty;
- Coordinate the student-directed New Play Festival annually;
- Foster collaboration with faculty, staff, other college departments, and local theater groups and artists;
- Oversee development of programs, manage ticket sales, and oversee production budget;
- In collaboration with the Marketing department, oversee marketing of performances;
- Coordinate the relevant photography and videography;
- License scripts and music for all shows;
- Recruit and coordinate staff for props, costumes, music direction, etc;
- In collaboration with other Theatre faculty, select plays;
- Cast show through auditions;
- Set rehearsal and tech schedule, in collaboration with Technical Theatre Director;
- Direct and block show; work with designers and production staff in a collaborative manner to stage production.
- Participates in program development and revision;
- Participates in curriculum development, review, modification, and deletion;
- Participates in budget development and maintenance, equipment storage and inventory, and program review;
- Develops and assesses student learning outcomes in the discipline;
- Participates in full-time and part-time faculty evaluations;
- Provides input and assistance to the Dean regarding the schedule of classes, schedule changes, and the recruitment and assignment of part-time faculty in the discipline;
- Collaborates with the campus centers concerning classes in the discipline;
- Supports students in the Conservatory Cohort;
- Chairs the Friends of the Theatre and collaborates with the Foundation on fundraising and events.
INSTITUTIONAL:
- Reports prepared and on time for meetings; attends in-service days, commencements, and faculty meetings as scheduled;
- Completes required flex hours for professional development purposes; serves on college committees;
- May supervise student workers in the discipline;
- Participates in the processes of shared governance;
- Participates in activities to create and promote career pathways, including articulation with local high schools and four-year colleges
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS:
Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including but not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB Test.
Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, geographic and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, and faculty.
EDUCATION QUALIFCATION:
Master's or Master of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance
OR Bachelor's or Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama/theater arts/performance
AND Master's in comparative literature, English, communication studies, speech, literature or humanities
OR the equivalent

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and supervise dance performances and dance curriculum;
- Demonstrated ability to produce and direct large casts of 20+ actors in a 400+ seat theatre;
- Record of community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration; commitment to building connections with local theatre organizations;
- Understanding of and experience with the process of new play development.

- Manage fiscal resources;

- Manage large productions, including the ability to direct and produce musical theatre productions;

- Effectively instruct assigned courses using a variety of techniques and methods of delivery; evaluate and develop curriculum and instructional materials; assess student academic progress; develop course schedules; stay current in the subject area through continued professional development and active involvement in professional organizations and activities; evaluate faculty; maintain records; prepare reports;
- Work effectively with a wide variety of personalities and situations using sound judgment; work effectively with students, faculty, staff and the community; communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; work variable locations and hours, including evenings and weekends;
- Inspire students from a wide range of cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Theatre productions and performance, including stage direction, production design, and script analysis.
- Best practices in culturally responsive and anti-racist teaching and curriculum development;
- Strategies for engaging students from diverse backgrounds;
- Musical theater; The complex variables involved in managing a theatre company in an academic context.
